Copyright infringement has been a topic up for discussion for months . I believe Liberian  artists , managers , promoters and media personals share a common goal ; to ensure Liberian musicians work is protected , royalties is earned and music is distributed without fear of unauthorized use.

Consider Nigeria copyright Act , Chapter C28 administered by Nigeria Copyright Commission for instance. Nigerian law allows use of copyright material without acquiring permission from the copyright holder with condition in law and limited use  – where the use is for non commercial materials , for reviews ,  education / research purposes , reporting current events , criticism etc . Nigeria music industry generated 51 million dollars in 2016 ( Nigeria media network , Pulse Nigeria revealed) – despite Nigerian music being obtainable on streaming sites , and several music platforms.

We wrote a review for a popular Liberian song in 2016 . Last night Facebook mentioned the post was reported by a third-party claiming rights to our post, simply because our review included the song audio .  Liberia music insider was the first and only media house to promote the now popular song online . The Artist shared the review and was appreciative at the time . We have learnt the underground artist has a new management team who may have reported the review as infringement of copyrighted material . In order to prevent such incident, Liberia Music Insider Facebook page is now unpublished . With great sadness , The page is now only visible to staff . .

There is a saying “knowledge is power ” . Without education on basic copyright facts , Liberia music industry will remain stagnant .

The YouTube TOS states the following –

You also hereby grant each user of the Service a non-exclusive license to access your Content through the Service, and to use, reproduce, distribute, display and perform such Content as permitted through the functionality of the Service and under these Terms of Service. ~~ [youTube TOS part 6C

This clearly states that the owner of the video grants you a limited license to embed the video simply by leaving the embed option on (which is part of the functionality of the YouTube Service).

However, there is another wrinkle to this YouTube copyright infringement issue – what if the uploader of the YouTube video does not own the rights to the video?

In this case, it is an infringing YouTube video. There are many such videos on youTube, usually movies, t.v. shows, and music videos.

It is clearly against copyright laws to embed an infringing YouTube video in your article, blog, or website

In the case of a picture or image, you must first get permission from the owner of the image, unless the image is public domain. You should also attribute all images back to their original site (i.e. site you got the image from) and content creator/owner.
